From Aesthetic to Funky… the Changing Trends in Jewelry!

A country which boasts a rich history replete with powerful kingdoms and empires, indeed deserves illustrations and books penned on its rich culture. And, to me, Indian culture ushers the memories of those exotic and dazzling pieces of jewelry donned by the opulent Maharanis.  In fact, the latest flick, Jodha Akbar, starring the world’s most beautiful woman, Mrs Aishwarya Rai Bachchan spotting some of the most spectacular jewelry, is quite a delight for the jewelry lovers like me.

Looking at the trends in jewelry, it is imperative for me to start right from the dawn of the civilization. Some of the earliest form of humans, the tribals, made abundant use of raw materials like wood, feathers, stones et al to carve something what we now call, jewelry. In fact, any thing and everything handy, like, fruit seeds, animal bones, claws, were picked to fashion their jewelry. Even today, visit the tribal groups like Munda from Jharkhand, Khasi from Meghalaya et al and you’ll find some odd women spotting similar kinda jewelry.

Delving into the pages of our oldest epics, I found elaborate pages on gold and silver ornaments. Watch any of these epics telecast on television and you’d know what I am talking about. An elaborate piece of jewelry for every part of the body… tikkas for the forehead, anklets, bangles, mangalsutras et al. Well, so many jewelry forms do reflect the talent and creativity of our goldsmiths, dont they?

Rich, beautifully designed gold ornaments where a forte of that period. Even the warrior animals, like elephants, horses were beautifully adorned in ornaments much to the dismay of their contemporary situation. Then came a revolution in the business of jewelry making by the onset of the Mughal empires. They brought the fashion of gems engraved jewelry on the forefront. India became the major source and trading centre of the precious stones.  The ostentatious display of jewels worn by the mughals in my history books and museums are big head-turners for sure.

Any way, then came the jewelry for divinity. Rudraksh, sandalwood beaded necklaces were meant to don the spiritual souls and their portraits.

Ask me and I believe, today’s era the best. The concept of spiritual and aesthetic jewelry has today merged into costume jewelry. An era where fashion is the driving factor for one’s jewelry purchase and not just financial security, spirituality or opulence.

It is well observed that the old and gone is yet creating a rage today. Take for example, the kundan work, filgiri work et al. Also, precious and semi-precious stones designed in delicate and chic designs are in. Wood, glass and other stones engraved jewelry are today in and fashionable.

Jewelry is no more feminine… as both guys and girls indulge themselves into sleek, definitive jewelries to make a statement. Also, piercing is what they say, the cool thing today. So, one may find funky stuff like sleek earings, nose pins, rings used as popular accessories for piercing.

What are the Things You Should Know About Nipple Piercing

Research states that one search term that has been consistently popular since the inception of the Internet is “nipple piercing.” The popularity it enjoys in present times is partly due to celebrities who publicly displayed their piercings or confessed to have one such as Tommy Lee or Lenny Kravitz If you want to join the trend of modern pop stars with exposed wannabe hunk look, here is a detailed description of its sensual pleasure, nipple jewelry, its health risks and tips to avoid infection.

How to care for nipple piercing?

With many women, nipple piercings takes 3-6 months to heal on average. Some may take even a year. However men’s nipples heal faster due to differences in tissue composition and hormones. Experienced women usually complain extra issues with healing during their menstrual cycles. So far none of the researchers state any interference between well-healed piercings and breast feeding, although it is not recommended to get new piercings before, during or after pregnancy due to changes of body state.

Follow these tips to avoid piercing infections

1. To thoroughly clean and rinse the nipple piercing, clean the piercing under the shower.
Once the piercing is healed, the person finds the tissue more developed, with increased sensation and responsiveness.

2. Use a fragrance free anti-bacterial soap. Lather the soap and wash all areas of the piercing. Rinse the piercing site and jewelry until all soap has been removed. You can pat the site dry when you leave the shower.

3. Do not use any alcohol-based cleaning solutions, tea tree oil, hydrogen peroxide, skin cleansers, antiseptic solutions or cream. These can dry out the skin and can sometimes result in prolonged healing times.

4. It is recommended to rotate the jewelry while cleaning the area. This will help get the entire piercing clean and avoid infection.

5. Avoid swimming until the piercing has healed as water can pose a risk of infection.

6. Do not wear tight clothing at the piercing site. This will irritate the wound.

7. To deal with the pain use an over the counter pain reliever. A nipple piercing can cause discomfort and this can help lessen the pain and reduce swelling.

8. During the healing period touch the piercing area only when necessary. If the nipple piercing is touched too often, it will take a longer time to heal. Make sure not to use your fingernails to move the jewelery.
Sensual pleasure:

Once the piercing is healed, the person finds the tissue more developed, with increased sensation and responsiveness. Men especially report increase in tissue thickness and tactile sensitivity. A variety of jewelry styles is available for wear including curved barbells, horseshoe attachments and many variations for attaching chains and dangles to increase the sensual pleasure.

Nipple jewelry

Most jewelry types can be worn in both male and female nipple piercings. Nipple jewelry can be made from gold, white gold, steel or gold-plated steel. Popular varieties include a ring (with or without a bead or pendant threaded through it), a dumbbell and a D-shaped ring with the straight side through the nipple.

Health Risks

Here are all the possible risks and side effects, but that doesn’t mean that the person will experience all, or any, of these.

1. Infection of the nipple, which in women can quickly travel through the milk ducts and into the lymph nodes under the arm.
2. Nerve damage,
3. Bleeding
4. Growth of a cyst inside the nipple
5. Allergic reactions,
6. Keloid scarring (raised, red scarring).
7. Nipple piercing is also associated with hepatitis B and hepatitis C infection, and even HIV.

Use these above guidelines to experience a sensual body art.
